The Podechesis Podcast (Episode 19) On Jesus Christ Part 2: On the Incarnation

What is the incarnation?  Did the second person of the Trinity really put on flesh and experience the human reality?  What is meant by the creedal affirmations of conception by the Holy Spirit and Jesus being born of a virgin?  Is affirmation to the  virgin birth necessary to Christian faith?  If Jesus was tempted as we are, did he also experience sin as we do?

On this episode of The Podechesis Podcast, the guys discuss question 22 of John Wesley’s Revision of the Westminster Shorter CatechismHow did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?  Brett, Allen, and Jim will discuss big theological issues like the incarnation, the virgin birth, Christ’s sinlessness, and why Mary is important to all Christians.

Along the way, Brett proves he’s right about which episode number this is, Jim proves he’s wrong, and Allen brings out the old TI-85 to show that both Jim and Brett have lost the plot.

The Podechesis Podcast (Episode 17) On Sin Part 5: On Misery and Hell

What are the eternal consequences of our fallenness?  What is the miserable estate in which we live?  What does it mean to be separated from our creator?  What is hell and does it truly exist?  Does the love of God negate the idea of hell?  I hell necessary?

On this episode of The Podechesis Podcast, the guys take on two of the questions from John Wesley’s Revision of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, Q19- What is the misery of that estate into which man fell; and Q20-Did God leave all mankind to perish in the estate of sin and misery?  They will deal with topics like the eternal consequences of human fallenness, the losing communion with God, and whether or not the idea of hell is outdated.  They will also discuss why John Wesley completely redacted question and answer 20.

Along the way, Brett will forget his name, Allen will try to interject “hell” in non-theological ways as much as possible, and Jim will wonder if Allen and Brett are trying to make his podcast life a living h…, well, you know.

The Podechesis Podcast (Episode 16) On Sin Part 4: The Fallen Nature

What the difference between the sinful nature and sins committed?  In what way is our nature corrupted by sin?  What original righteousness?  Is it possible to not sin?  What is the guilt of sin and how is it passed down?

In this episode of The Podechesis Podcast, Jim, Brett, and Allen continue their discussion on sin by looking at questions 17, Into what estate did the fall bring mankind? and 18, Wherein consists the sinfulness of that estate into which man fell? of John Wesley’s Revision of the Westminster Shorter Catechism.  They talk about why correct thinking of our fallen nature matters, how modern zombie tropes can be the perfect analogy for our sinful nature, and why the doctrine of Christian perfection is so important.

Along the way, Allen makes a big comeback, Jim makes cheesy preacher jokes, and Brett decides its time to catch up on newer movies and TV shows.

The Podechesis Podcast (Episode 15) On Sin Part 3: The Scope of Sin w/ Special Guest Rev. Rebecca Duke-Barton

What is the scope of sin?  How deep and wide is its reach in humanity?  What is the consequence of Sin?  Were Adam and Eve real people or archetypes for all of humanity?  How are sin and the consequences of sin passed down from generation to generation?

In this episode of The Podechesis Podcast, Jim and Brett are joined by special guest (and pinch-hitter for Allen) Rev. Rebecca Duke-Barton, pastor of Jesup First United Methodist Church, to discuss question 16 of  John Wesley’s Revision of the Westminster Shorter CatechismDid all mankind fall in Adam’s first transgression?  They will talk about the idea of original sin and whether the problem of sin is passed down from generation to generation.  They will also discuss the need for a robust and faithful theology of sin and of grace in the church today.

Along the way, Brett will find that it is getting harder and harder to be relevant having not watched any of the Mandalorian, Rebecca will make a case for tractor-beam theology, and Jim will make fun of Allen over and over only because Allen wasn’t there to defend himself.

The Podechesis Podcast (Episode 14) On Sin Part 2: The Fruit of Sin

What exactly was the sin that Adam and Eve committed when they ate the fruit from the forbidden tree?  Why was that fruit forbidden in the first place?  Who’s at fault for breaking God’s command?  What is God trying to hide from humanity in forbidding the knowledge of good and evil?

In this episode of The Podechesis Podcast, the Brett, Jim, and Allen discuss question 15 of John Wesley’s Revision of the Westminster Shorter CatechismWhat was the sin by which our first parents fell from the estate in which they were created? They talk about the root of sin, why freewill is so important, and how the sin of our fore-parents impacts us even today.  They also talk about why an understanding of the fall of Adam and Eve matters to us today.

Along the way, Allen shows off his new Lego creation, Jim tries his hand at being a Hebrew scholar, and Brett has praise heaped upon himself—if only for this episode.

The Podechesis Podcast: Christmas (and Advent) Special

It’s Christmas time (and Advent) once again.  The hot chocolate is flowing, the movies are on, and the lights are twinkling brightly.  The question is does Christmas still matter?

In this special Christmas (and Advent) episode of the Podechesis Podcast, the boys take a break from Wesley’s Revision of the Shorter Catechism to share some of their favorite Christmas memories, movies, songs, and foods.  They talk about Christmas lights and the Light of the world, Jesus.  They also make a case for why the season of Advent is so important for the church.

Along the way we find out that the Brett loves the movie, A Christmas Story, and Jim and Allen do not.  Can The Podechesis Podcast survive with such a vast chasm between the two wayward sons and Brett?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Podechesis Community. We will return with our regular episodes in January.

The Podechesis Podcast (Episode 13) On Sin Part 1: What is Sin?

What is Sin?  Why does sin exist?  Are we born with sinful natures or are we nurtured into sin?  What does it mean to break God’s law?  Are we naturally good?  What was humanity’s first taste of disobedience—pride or unbelief?  Can you have a right understanding of sin without a right understanding of grace?  How does Jesus fit into this discussion?

In this episode of The Podechesis Podcast, the Brett, Jim, and Allen discuss questions 13 and 14 of John Wesley’s Revision of the Westminster Shorter CatechismDid our first parents continue in the estate in which they were created (Q. 13), and what is sin (Q. 14)?  They talk about how sin entered the world, how our natures are corrupted, and how we are bent towards disobedience to God’s law.  They also discuss how a thoroughly biblical and  theologically robust teaching of sin is needed in the church today.

Along the way, Jim makes a confession, Allen makes a wager, and Brett is once again left having to clean all the thanksgiving dishes.  Oh, and no turkeys were harmed in the production of this episode.
